Superintendent Scott Robinson tipped his hat to staff after the smooth reopening of Richmond schools last week.

New health and safety protocols were in place to ease students’ fear and anxiety. Once they entered school again, Robinson said they realized it was a safe environment.

However, he added, there were fewer students in schools than anticipated—only about a quarter of the usual number, rather than the third indicated by the results of a survey sent to all parents.

“As the week progressed, it levelled out,” said Robinson.

There were between 300 and 350 high schoolers attending each day for subject-based tutorials, with all other students continuing with remote learning. The current system will continue until June 25 for elementary students and June 19 for secondary students.

The provincial ministry has indicated that some kind of hybrid education model will likely continue in the fall—although much may change over the summer.

“Richmond is planning for a lot of different scenarios,” said Robinson.

He also agreed that, with many parents returning to work full-time as businesses resume operations, there will need to be a shift in the provincial child care model. With physical distancing and reduced group sizes a continued necessity, full school attendance will not be possible.

“The question is going to be, how is the government going to address this, and how are we going to implement it?” said Robinson.
